The title says it all. Today was much better. Not perfect, but progress was definitely made. I have started giving Jerid his baths. On Sunday Jerid decided that he didn't like the guy who was giving him sponge baths. Jerid said that this large Jamaican guy manhandled him. So I got the job. Our first time was rough. I didn't do it correctly. Well, I can say that Annalise never complains when I bathe her. But Jerid and I bickered through the whole process. I told him that it was our first "post-op fight". He said that he didn't even know that we were fighting. Must be nice to be high all day. We've gotten the hang of it now and I give them to him daily. That's what we did first thing today.
Then we got him into his chair. Honestly, it takes about 45 minutes to move him the 4 feet from the bed to the chair. Their are tubes and hoses everywhere that need to be moved and manipulated and unplugged and untangled. Then we need to stop so Jerid can rest for a bit. Then we get him into the chair and the tubes and hoses are again rearranged. Good times. It's absolutely exhausting.
We saw one of the doctors that comes in everyday to check on Jerid. She said that she could hear a lot more air moving in his lungs. We talked about the bacteria (which is still OK) and his anxiety. She again reassured us that it is completely normal. She feels that most of it is being caused from sleep deprivation combining with the drugs and lack of nutrition. It will get better. Exercise will help. She asked if he was walking yet. No. She said that she'd like to see him do a little today. Jerid asked if it could wait until tomorrow. Thank God she said no. When she left, I asked Jerid why he wanted to put it off. He said that it was because when he did walk, he wanted to be able to really go for it. Oh silly Jerid. I told him that we had to take baby steps. If he only walked to the door that would be awesome.
So in came PT. It's hard to explain what they use to walk with, but basically it is a chest high walker on wheels with padded arms. The patient leans on it and rolls it as they walk. After about 10 minutes of the PT's getting all of the tubes and hoses situated we were ready. Up he stood and off he walked. Out the door a few steps and a short rest. Then all the way down to the nurses station. (About 5 doors down) Because so many people in the unit are having similar issues, the halls are crowded with people on walkers with IV poles and tubes trailing behind. They really need to get some traffic lights set up. Between the walkers and the nurses and the aids, there's going to be a major collision. Anyway, we walked back to the room and Jerid sat back down in the chair. Yippee! He did it! Of course when I told him how proud of him I was, he he said that he didn't do anything. Whatever!
After that, it was definitely nap time. We wanted to try to get him to walk again later, but it just didn't work out. This was a good start though. Now we're on our way.
The doctor put him on a new medication to draw the fluid out of his body faster. His body responed really well and within the first 2 hours I was there he peed 800 cc's. Wow! That's a lot of pee! Everyone says that once he gets the chest tubes out he'll be a new man. Less pain and it will be so much easier to get around. This medication should help get us there faster.
As always, tomorrow will be a better day. I can feel it. Plus, I'm going to shave him and wash his hair and that just screams fun. We just need to get him eating.
Still no sign of the Captain. I really hope he hasn't been released. I didn't even get to say goodbye.
Thanks for all of the cards and good wishes. They've really been rolling in and the whole cork board in his room is covered. It's good for Jerid to know how many people miss him and are waiting to see him come home.

Hey Rinny and Jerid !
I bet I can get Jerid to walk faster! I'll just give him his bath ... and I'll even be glad to pull off those cute "Bambi-bikini panties" that he wears in all of the pictures. Not to worry ... I've given alot of sponge baths ... and never once did I leave soap on the "man-hood". I make sure I scrub, rinse, and dry it well. We din't want it to get a chill and catch a cold.
What do ya think? That will get him moving when he sees me coming down the hall with the basin and towels.
I love you all and am so happy to hear daily about all the great accomplishments that Jerid is making. You are doing a great job Rinny ... Love, Aunt Debbie
Yay! Keep him walking and keep him "high". Be sure to refer to the kindergarten safety school manual for the hallway traffic issues. I am very happy to hear the big advancement. I knew yesterday would be a better day. Go Jerid! BTW Marin in case you don't hear it enough. "You Rock!"

Marin, I absolutely love reading your daily blogs and finding out how things are going. You have an awesome way of describing everything. It brings lots of smiles and is also comforting, to know your both doing ok. I'm so happy he is walking that is awesome. Jerid, you did do a "big thing" be happy you have a very proud wife. Take a compliment, man. HA HA. Glad all is getting better. We are all praying and thinking of you guys constantly. Tell him if he complains too much of the bathing situation - you can gladly turn it back over to the paid staff, hmmmm how bout them apples. As Ty said - You do Rock!!!
Hope today was great!
Just wanted to let you both know Annalise has been walking around all moning with her play phone saying mama and dada and telling a big story not sure what but she knows. She is doing great and I'm sure misses you both. I told her about Daddy walking she clapped her hands so tell him she is proud of him. See you soon
Love you both
Tamara
Good job Jerid!! Before you know it they'll have to strap you in bed to keep you still. Good job to you too Marin for taking on the role of Nurse Rinny. I wouldn't want some big Jamaican guy scrubbing me down either. The Jamaican guy is probably just as glad to not have to wash another man. Or he might be upset that you took away his only enjoyment for the day, who knows. Anyway keep up the good work.
Love you both,
Tony
Marin,
Hey, been reading everyday for updates just really don't know what to say! WOW you two are amazing! God must have something really good in mind for you two! The strength, determination and love you two share is absolutely astonishing! I am so glad to hear Jarid is moving along so well and on his way to a speedy recovery! I know you are the "best" (I use that term loosely when it comes to you:) nurse he could have. You are awfully demanding and pushy!! :) Tell Jerid I wish him well and have been praying/thinking about you both often. Hey, can't wait to see you on Saturday! Have a safe flight home, I know you will be very anxious to get back there! Take care, get some rest!
Heather
PS: I could have sworn I seen that naughty Daisy driving down my street today with Charlie (in his chaps) on the back and those two were screaming like fools!!! :)

Thanks Again Marin for the blog, I will be a daily internet junkie now
Hi! I have been thinking about Jerid walking today. Every time I think about it, that song from the movie Benny and Joon, "I would walk 500 miles...." keeps popping into my head. Ok, I just had to look it up, and it is 514 miles to your house in Springfield! So, you can just tell Jerid he is walking his way home to you and Annalise, and when he is walking in physical therapy, he can think of that song. dah dat dat dah, dah dat dat dah, dum da dum dad da da dah or something like that anyway. Maybe you can sing it to him? :)
Please tell Jerid Good Job for us, and we are so proud of him. Thank you again for keeping us so well updated. We all really really apreciate you taking time out every evening when you are tired to write us such wonderful updates. We Love you, Liz
