Hello? Can I speak to Einstein?

Today started out very early. 3:30 am to be exact. I was in a deep sleep when my cell phone rang. Of course when I saw Jerid's name on the caller ID, panic overtook me. I answered and there was no response. "Hello? Hello? Baby, I need you to talk to me." I shouted in the phone. No answer. Click. Phone went dead. You can imagine the fear. So I called him back and he answered. He told me that he was just confused. He was using the alarm on his phone to wake himself up so that he could push his pain medicine button. He swore that he was fine and we hung up. I went back to sleep. Much later today, he explained. Apparently Jerid was dreaming that he needed to ask Einstein some questions. Yes, Albert Einstein. They were apparently friends so he called him on the phone. Unfortunately, he dialed my number by mistake. Jerid is definitely going to lose his phone privileges if he keeps this up.

Besides that, our day wasn't too bad.

We had a little blip. The doctors found bacteria in Jerid's blood. They can't be sure, but they think that it's from his incision wound which is seeping. It's being cleaned out a couple of times a day and they're going to try a new antibiotic. This is not as easy as it sounds though, as Jerid is allergic to 5 families of antibiotics. But they're going to try to find one that works. We saw 2 infectious disease doctors and it was just like House (the TV show, which we love). They were standing around trying to solve the mystery. Very exciting. They're not too worried yet, and worse case scenario is that Jerid will have to be desensitized to one of the antibiotics which he's allergic to. This would involve a stay back in the ICU. As always though, we just have to wait and see.

We finally got to meet Dr. Pocchotino, The lung surgeon who actually did Jerid's transplant. He's been on vacation, and actually came in during to do the surgery. He was very nice and is very pleased with Jerid's progress. This was the 5th lung/liver transplant that he's worked on, and he said that Jerid was out of the ICU faster than any of the others. He's progressing very well and wants to get 2 more of the chest tubes out so that Jerid can start walking.

Jerid had McDonald's for lunch today. The hospital food was just too unbearable. He's still on mechanical soft and as you can see in the photo, it's really not fit for a dog. So McDonald's it was. A cheeseburger and french fries. And thanks to Ronald and the laxatives, we had to rush Jerid to the pot. Again. I picked up the new issue of Car & Driver for him and it sits next to the bedside toilet. The aid who came in to empty the pot asked if we'd like a can of air freshener. Definitely. That's the Jerid we know and love.

Captain Crazy pants had some visitors today. I got to watch him show them the monitors that he likes to stare at. As usual, he was in fine form. Jerid's other neighbor is named Joeseph Jackall. But when the nurses talk to him it sounds like they say Mr. Jeckyll. So we call him Dr. Jeckyll and are waiting to see Mr. Hyde. He's a very loud old man so you can hear all of his phone conversations. Today he was telling someone that he's bored as hell. (See how exciting the hospital is? The fun never stops.)

Jerid and I have now asked for Rice Krispies 6 times. Still no sign of them.

Jerid's been getting bored when I'm not there so we had the TV channels turned on. Maybe he'll stop making phone calls to dead people.

We learned how to work the insulin machine thingy that Jerid will have to use at home. A very exciting lesson. Obviously the nurse is used to teaching elderly people how to do it because she was VERY thorough and was extremely impressed with how quickly we caught on. Seriously, it's less complicated than an alarm clock.

That's it for the day. It was a Sunday so it was slow. Jerid just called me to say goodnight. I asked him if he was going to sleep now and he said that he already was. OK then.

As you can see, I've taken some pictures. They're not the best since all I have is my camera phone, but at least they'll give you an idea of what things look like. I peppered them throughout the blogs so scroll down to past ones to see them.

Night Night.

Hey Jerid! Long time no talk to. Mom and dad sent the blog to me and clued me in on everything thats been going on. Good to hear that you are doing so well and I hope that things just keep getting better for you and your family. I'm glad to know that you have such a strong attitude and outlook on this... I think that is the key to getting through such a hard time as this. If you don't know this by now.... God has plans for you... may not know now, but you will when the time comes! Take care.

Thank you for the pictures but I want more more more :) It's great to see you guys. It's been along time since I've seen you. Just one question do you have to eat the cheese burgers ground up to? I'm excited to hear that they are going to get Jerid up and walking soon. As soon as he gets the feel of not having to lay in that bed your going to have to chase him around the unit just like Mr. Crazy pants. That is if he still is try to contact the dead and all. Love you sooooo much !!!

Marin, it was great to hear your voice. Can't wait until Jerid's voice is back to hear him too. We are glad you have the blog so we don't have to have Janice repeat herself a hundred times a day. Don't worry about those little bumps in the road, everyone has them, when Colleen was born, they had to put her on a medication that she was alleric to and she swelled up and blotched up and turned purple. They will find the right thing and take care of him quickly. Thank goodness for modern medicine. You guys seem to be in great spirits, Keep it up. Sorry waited so long to write, Zach was in a ball tournament this weekend and his team won the tournament. Tell Jerid, just wait, he will be collecting Zach Smiths baseball cards someday! We are all thinking of you and hoping everyday is a good day.

Holy canoli! That food looks AWFUL! Please tell me Jerid hasn't lost his appetite for pizza! You haven't mentioned it once and I'm starting to get concerned:-)
You both look wonderful and it was so good to finally "see" him and confirm that he still has that crazy look in his eyes. You know, the one that looks like he's thinking of pizza!
Only Jerid the Genius would dream of talking to Einstein. It's scary to think that Jerid could probably carry on a meaningful conversation with ol Albert if they ever met.

WOW! Great Work! Congratulations on your pooper working again. I was begining to get a little worried ... but ... when I went to bed last night I said this little prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray that Jerid will have to poop....if I should wake and no poop yet, I pray the nurse no "scoop" to use. I guess He heard me because He really let it go!
If you are wondering why I haveng left a blob message yet, I just can't get these new-fangled computers down ... talk about someone needing the COMPUTER FOR DUMMIE BOOK! Mandy did show me the tenth time how to do it so here I am ... writing a book.
I miss you guys and my beautiful Princess Annie. Thank you for the pics and one of these days we will all be together again. Look how quickly time has gone already.

Hi, I check your Blog like 10 times a day, if not more. I know you write your entries at night, and I know I probably won't find a new entry, but I just have to check, and re-read. I was so excited to see the pictures. It is so reassuring to get to see Jerid, but not so much the food. Is he allowed to have the Mc Donalds? (you know me, worry about everything) I laughed and cried so much while reading the last entry. You really are doing a great job keeping us updated, and Jerid is doing a great job giving you plenty of material to work with. We love you so much! Liz

I'm glad you put your address down a few blogs ago, because after I saw that mess on a tray, I went to work and made Jerid a pizza -it's on it's way! Hope he likes cabbage and potatos! Take care, try to rest, and stay strong. You two inspire me. God bless you, Tracy

J.E. aka now A.E.,

Had to change it to Al's name, but it still works!!! Glad to hear today was a better day. I get on the blog every morning to check on your progress, and feel so much better after seeing how good you look. Marin's jottings are so enjoyable, that I think the newspaper has her in the wrong department. Thanks so much for all the updates, know you are exhausted, but we do so appreciate your hard work. Wish I could send you some pizza, but I know that will be the next thing you will ask for!!

Love you,
Aunt Janice and Uncle Kenny
Sadie too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
